Cultivation of Chili, Sesame & Mustard farmer groups depends mainly on seasonal rains (monsoon). There are few small neglected irrigational tanks in this village & PODIE financially assisted this farmer group to rehabilitate one of these tanks to enable them store water during the rainy season, so that they could utilize this water for their cultivation during the dry season. The farmers also contributed with their labour to complete this project.
We have provided a Bio Mass Dryer for the benefit of Cardamom farmers for the drying process in accordance with excepted standards. We have provided Solar Dryers for the benefit of Kolugala & Matale farmer groups to dry their produce – Cloves, Black and White Pepper, Nutmeg, Mace and Cocoa. These facilities we have provided for these groups has solved the problem they have encounted earlier in this regard.

They grow Clove, nut-meg, mace, pepper, Cocoa, Coffee and vanilla. These are organic horticulture crops of a perennial nature. They cultivate their produce under the kandyan home garden concept.
This is an organic horticulture crop of perennial nature. Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is the country of origin for cinnamon (cinamomum zeylanicum).
The content in cinamomum zeylanicum is cinnamin aldehyde where as cinnamomum cassia contains cumerine. There is a belief that consumption of cumerine is harmful to liver.
During the period 15th to 18th centuary Portugese and Dutch invaded and colonised maritime provinces of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) to have a monopoly on the supply of cinnamon.
They grow Black & White Pepper, Clove, Nutmeg, Mace, Vanilla, Coffee and Cocoa .These are organic horticulture crops of a perennial nature. They are also being cultivated under kandyan home garden concept.
This farmer group is located in the Western Province of Sri Lanka.. This area is a semi wet and Dry Zone. They cultivate Turmeric, Ginger and Lemon Grass. These are not perennial crops. They have to replant them once every year.
The Turmeric and Ginger are growing roots under the earth. The Lemon Grass looks like a grass bush. Most of these farmers cultivate Turmeric, Ginger and Lemon Grass under the coconut cultivation as a secondary crop. Therefore the main crop is coconut and they get a good income from the harvest of coconut once every two months. Turmeric and Ginger harvest is only once every year but the harvest of lemon grass they do through out the year.
It is in the Nuwara Eliya District. They grow Cardamom, coffee and vanilla .These are organic horticulture crops of a perennial nature. They are cultivated under kandyan home garden Concept. The cardamom grows under the canopy of rain forest at a altitude of 3000 to 5000 feet.
They grow Lemon grass, Turmeric and Ginger. These are organic horticulture crops.
Presently the method they use to process turmeric & ginger is by boiling them in caldrons & drying them under the sun. With this method the maximum a farmer could process is around 50kgs of turmeric or ginger per week. The average harvest from each farmer is around 1000kgs. This method of processing is also hampered by south west monsoon rain which will start immediately after the harvesting season. As a result these crops are being exposed to Yeast & Mold during the rainy season.
